DESCRIPTION:Fri.\, April 5.  SARAH SPIEGEL.  Known as “the regal Miz\,” Sarah Spiegel recently debuted her album\, As Time Goes By\, her homage to the songs of WWII\, inspired by her show\, “Through the Perilous Fight (We Never Stopped Singing.)”  She has “opened” for Nancy Sinatra and Frank Sinatra\, Jr.\, has shared the stage with Jeff Goldblum and Donny Most\, and has toured alongside Louis Prima\, Jr. and The Witnesses.  Musical director for this show\, which promises to “immerse [listeners] in the enchanting world of big band music and the Great American Songbook\,” is Carl Byron.

DESCRIPTION:Sat.\, April 6.  LAURAL MEADE\, in “Ms. Tucker Will See You Now.”\nDuring nearly all of 2023\, Laural Meade continued to perfect her rollicking Sophie Tucker show\, tinkering with each iteration to ever more closely approach the asymptote of perfection.  Those in attendance in December who had previously seen the show only in its infancy were moved to remark how seemingly completely different\, how delightful\, and how terrific\, the show now inarguably is.  One longtime Gardenia patron even remarked that this show has become what is “maybe the best show I have ever seen at The Gardenia.” \nAn established member of the theater faculty at Occidental College\, playwright and musical performer Ms. Meade has sung in Southern California venues “both sacred and profane\,” and directs a choir for The Secret City.  Her vocal musicianship has turned heads at The Gardenia Open Mike\, where we were delighted to learn that she has penned this performance piece in which she exposits Sophie Tucker\, “the Last of the Red Hot Mamas\,” arguably the most popular entertainer of Tucker’s day\, in a bawdy cabaret exploration of Tucker’s extraordinary personal life\, career\, and risqué song catalog.   Because its subject “worked Blue\,” the show is constructed not for the faint of heart nor for the pearl-clutching pretenders of easy offence.  Using hilarity as pedagogue’s tool\, Ms. Mead also mobilizes impressive musical forces to allow her audience to conclude the evening “educationally enriched.”  Repeat audience members are now bringing friends—quite the testimonial as word of mouth spreads…… \n

DESCRIPTION:Sun.\, April 7 at 8 p.m.  ANDREA MARCOVICCI and MAUDE MAGGART\, through popular demand\, reprise “Brave and Foolish Things\,” their “witty\, intriguing\, emotional\, naughty\, clever\, sentimental\, esoteric\, arresting\, tender\,” and sold-out first outing together\, as the first in a series of monthly performances together\, echoing the heady 80’s days of the weekly “Marcovicci at Midnight.” \nFrequently introduced as “the Queen of Cabaret\,” Ms. Marcovicci transformed the genre\, has created over 35 nightclub acts at The Gardenia\, and holds the record—an unprecedented 25 seasons—at the legendary Oak Room of The Algonquin Hotel—as well as the distinction of being the Oak Room’s final performer before its closing.  She combines forces with Maude Maggart\, considered by many to be Marcovicci’s heir apparent\, who claims her own cabaret beginnings at The Gardenia a half generation later.  Our favorite endorsement of Ms. Maggart comes from Jim Bruce:  “If you have not yet heard Maude Maggart sing\, I envy you the moment of discovery because there is nothing quite like the very first time you realize what a talent she is.  Then again there is also nothing quite like every single time after.” \nAnd perhaps the cake’s icing\, recalling Andrea’s classic show\, “New Words\,” Maude’s husband David Lucky\, himself a Gardenia performance-veteran and songsmith\, introduces a brand-new song\, as does Musical Director Gerald Sternbach.  More can be learned at andreamarcovicci.com

SUMMARY:KAREN CELESTE KRUZ
DESCRIPTION:Thu.\, April  11.  KAREN CELESTE KRUZ\, in her third solo Gardenia outing\, her first since “the pandemic.”  Jazz a constant in her childhood home in Connecticut\, Ms. Kruz also derived influences from the unique musical sounds and culture of her primarily Hungarian family in Bridgeport.  But her neighborhood was more diverse—and she counts Broadway\, R & B\, blues\, and Latin styles among her influences as well.  She holds degrees in English and Counseling from the University of Connecticut and the University of LaVerne\, respectively; but she also studied music\, voice\, and Latin percussion here in Los Angeles\, where previously she has sung in many local venues.  Her three-octave instrument takes on many textures—from clear and precise to smoky\, bluesy\, and even growly; Ella Fitzgerald-esque to Janis Joplin-esque; big and open—to delicate as filigree— \n

SUMMARY:WAYNE WILENTZ and CRAIG COCHRANE
DESCRIPTION:Fri.\, April 26.  Wayne Wilentz and Craig Cochrane present “Hip to Be Hep: The Genius of Bob Dorough and Dave Frishberg” which celebrates the witty\, clever\, and wildly inventive compositions of two departed luminaries in the jazz world\, (both of whom\, coincidentally\, “played” The Gardenia “back in the day.”)  Mr. Wilentz has performed with such famous R&B acts as The Coasters\, The Shirelles\, The Marvellettes\, and Jimmy Norman\, and was a keyboardist and composer for the ’80’s funk band “SKYY\,” which earned a gold record for their album\, SKYY Line.  Specializing in Brazilian and American Jazz\, he moved to Los Angeles from the East Coast in 2020 and discovered Open Mike Nights at The Gardenia\, stunning the crowd with the depth of his talent.   Mr. Cochrane\, originally from New Jersey\, has played piano since age six\, sports a BA from Harvard\, has sung all over Los Angeles since arriving in 1991\, counts this his seventh Gardenia show\, has become known for his musical risk-taking\, and is a music photographer by day. His vocal influences include Jon Hendricks\, Mel Torme\, Carmen McRae and Jimmy Scott.   Joining them this evening will be special guest Keri Kelsey and bassist Adam Cohen. \n
