DESCRIPTION:Sat. and Sun.\, Sept. 7 & 8.  Dinner service begins at 6 p.m.  Showtime is 8 p.m.  MAUDE MAGGART\, in “Strangers.” \nPart of the fun in anticipating a Maude Maggart show involves the mystery created by knowing the show’s theme\, but then guessing how the material and its presentation will support that theme.  “Strangers” is an intriguing topic—a tease on many different levels—but the real (and extended) frisson hits only during the actual show when all reveals itself…and\, truth be known\, we’d rather not know the “set list” in advance.  It’s Maude\, after all…so we know the evening will be spectacular regardless…why chance the frisson with a spoiler alert? \nGerald Sternbach accompanies.  The show then goes to Birdland in New York City\, having been birthed\, as usual\, at The Gardenia. \nIn addition to her outings at The Gardenia\, Miss Maggart has graced the stages of Feinstein’s and The Carlyle and The Algonquin Hotels in New York\, attained national radio exposure by appearing with Garrison Keillor at the Town Hall broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion\, charmed Keillor so much that he invited her to appear with him again at The Hollywood Bowl\, appeared on the cover of Time Out New York\, and was the recipient of the Time Out New York MAC Award for “Special Achievement in Cabaret\,” AND the MAC Award for “Best Female Debut.”  In 2006\, she made her Carnegie Hall debut with Michael Feinstein\, sang with John Lithgow on his new children’s CD\, broke the summer attendance record at The Colony in Palm Beach\, sang with jazz great Dick Haymes and his orchestra at the Oregon Jazz Festival\, and was listed by Entertainment Weekly as one of the top 100 Summer picks.  She has also performed in London\, Chicago\, and Australia. SUMMARY:PIERRE CHAMBERS
DESCRIPTION:Sat.\, Sept. 14.  PIERRE CHAMBERS.  Perhaps best known to Gardenia audiences as the tenor/baritone harmonic anchor of the celebrated vocalese trio Chambers\, Herbert\, and Ellis—who re-introduced local audiences to the works of Lambert\, Hendricks\, and Ross—Mr. Chambers has “gone solo\,” and is the son of Paul Chambers\, noted bassist who worked with Miles Davis and John Coltrane in the ‘50’s.  Prior to his association with “C\,H\, & E\,” Pierre\, having been born in Brooklyn\, sang with the Lance Hayward Singers\, an East Coast jazz vocal group.  He was a featured singer for the Big Band Jazz Group\, and sang with the Family Tree Singers\, Bill Lee’s group.  (Bill Lee is Spike Lee’s father\, and composer for many of his son’s films.)  Mr. Chambers made his solo debut at The Gardenia last year\, making quite the impression as he released his solo CD\, Shining Moments\, which received glowing reviews from critics around the world\, including Scott Yanow\, then reached “#3” on the Jazzweek charts.

DESCRIPTION:Fri.\, Oct. 4.  MICHAEL KENNEN MILLER\, in “Back on the Mic\, Again\,” with musical direction by Kyle DeTarnowsky.  Armed with a BFA in Music Theater from Elon University\, Mr. Miller also possesses National Tour credits which include Footloose (Willard Hewitt\,) and Fiddler on the Roof (Fyedka.)  Other credits have included Broadway Backwards\, Hairspray (Link Larkin\,) West Side Story (Diesel\,) South Pacific (Professor\,) and You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown (Snoopy.)  He is also featured in Lady Gaga’s G.U.Y.\,and in viral videos for College Humor\, which have garnered millions of views.  An advisor on the documentary Bathtubs over Broadway\, which won the 2019 Writers Guild Award for “Best Documentary Screenplay\,” Mr. Miller has also performed live at the Tribeca Film Festival. \n

SUMMARY:ANDREA MARCOVICCI and MAUDE MAGGART
DESCRIPTION:Sun.\, October 6 at 8 p.m.  (Door opens and dinner service begins at 6 p.m.)   ANDREA MARCOVICCI and MAUDE MAGGART host a Gardenia reunion of sorts in “Great Gals and More\,” with guests Amanda McBroom\, Michele Brourman\, and Babbie Green\, each a singer-songwriter\, cabaret\, and stage luminary in her own right\, and each of whom starred at The Gardenia back in the ‘80’s and thereafter. \nFrequently introduced as “the Queen of Cabaret\,” Ms. Marcovicci transformed the “cabaret genre\,” has created over 35 nightclub acts at The Gardenia\, and holds the record—an unprecedented 25 seasons—at the legendary Oak Room of The Algonquin Hotel—as well as the distinction of being the Oak Room’s final performer before its closing.  She combines forces with Maude Maggart\, considered by many to be Marcovicci’s heir apparent\, who can boast her own cabaret beginnings at The Gardenia a half generation later.  Our favorite endorsement of Ms. Maggart comes from Jim Bruce:  “If you have not yet heard Maude Maggart sing\, I envy you the moment of discovery because there is nothing quite like the very first time you realize what a talent she is.  Then again there is also nothing quite like every single time after.”  Musical Director is Gerald Sternbach. \nMiss McBroom\, an “urban poet who writes like an angel and has a voice to match\,” first became well known when Bette Midler’s recording of her song\, “The Rose\,” hit number one all over the world in 1979.  She has since had her songs recorded by artists from Barbara Cook to Donny Osmond—and from The Manhattan Transfer to The Chipmunks—and she herself has sung in venues from Carnegie Hall to The Kennedy Center; from Angel Recital Hall in Sydney to the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall in Taiwan; and from Rainbow & Stars in Manhattan to Pizza on the Park in London. \nIn addition to Amanda McBroom\, Miss Brourman has supplied musical direction/piano accompaniment for such diverse talents as Dixie Carter\, Tovah Feldshuh\, Bernadette Peters\, and Bob Dylan.  She continues to present her own cabaret shows—solo and with others—and has had her own songs recorded by such celebrated performers as Michael Feinstein\, Margaret Whiting\, and Cleo Laine. \nThe daughter of legendary tunesmith Johnny Green\, who wrote “Body and Soul\,”  Miss Green is a formidable songsmith herself and graced the Gardenia stage both as a solo performer and with others “back in the day.” Her first CD\, In Nobody’s Shadow\, has been called “a contemporary cabaret treasure chest” by Drama-Logue; and her second CD\, Soldiers of the Heart\, received a MAC nomination for Multiple Artist Recording of the Year in 2001.  She herself was the winner of the first Johnny Mercer Songwriting Award and the 1994 Backstage Bistro Award for Outstanding Songwriter.  Her songs have been recorded and/or performed by Andrea Marcovicci\, Michael Feinstein\, Margaret Whiting\, and Amanda McBroom\, to name a few\, and she has performed her songs herself at Carnegie Hall\, the 92nd Street Y\, Town Hall\, The Chicago Humanities Festival\, and up and down the West Coast.  Michael Feinstein adds\, “The songs of Babbie Green are wonderfully crafted miniatures\, brimming with wit and wonder. She is a great talent with a rare and keen interpretive ability. In short\, I love her work.”

DESCRIPTION:Sun.\, Oct. 13.  KAREN CELESTE KRUZ\, in “Black Lace and Freudian Slips.”  Jazz a constant in her childhood home in Connecticut\, Ms. Kruz also derived influences from the unique musical sounds and culture of her primarily Hungarian family in Bridgeport.  But her neighborhood was more diverse—and she counts Broadway\, r & b\, blues\, and Latin styles among her influences as well.  She holds degrees in English and Counseling from the University of Connecticut and the University of LaVerne\, respectively\, but she also studied music\, voice\, and Latin percussion here in Los Angeles\, where previously she has sung in many local venues.  Her three-octave instrument takes on many textures—from clear and precise to smoky\, bluesy\, and even growly; Ella Firzgerald-esque to Janis Joplin-esque; big and open—to delicate as filigree— \n

DESCRIPTION:Sat.\, Oct. 19.  JOHN VANCE\, in “Mostly Jobim:  A Celebration of Brazilian Jazz\,”  with musical direction provided by Jeff Colella; Chris Colangelo on bass; and Steve Cotter on guitar.  In addition to works by Antonio Carlos Jobim\, this show also features works by Luis Bonfa\, Sergio Mendes\, Dori Caymmi\, and Marcos Valle.  Many will also recognize Mr. Vance as a TV actor\, (Hacks\, New Girl\, Two and a Half Men\, Malcolm in the Middle\, The New Normal\, and Passions\, to name a few.  On film he was directed by George Clooney in Leatherheads\, in which he had the rare treat of playing a mother and son—in the same scene! \nMr. Vance credits the Gardenia’s Tuesday open mike nights as a springboard for the recordings he produced in the “aughts” with Jeff Colella—It’s all Right With Me and Dreamsville (Erawan Records.)  Currently\, their music is streaming on Spotify\, Apple Music\, and Pandora.   More can be discovered at www.johnvance.com.

DESCRIPTION:Sun.\, Oct. 27.  DOLORES SCOZZESI. Making her start “years ago\, when Budd Friedman’s Improv sprinkled singers between its comedy acts\,” Ms. Scozzesi studied with The Groundlings and with J.D. Lewis and Aaron Speiser.  As “an actress who sings\,” she was cast in Paul Horner’s award-winning musical revue\, Suddenly This Summer\, for which critics described her as “an arresting presence\, smokily dramatic…a blend of intelligence and passion.”    Piers Ford\, in reviewing her CD\, Jazz is a Special Taste\, enthused\, “It’s the voice that grabs you to begin with.  A rich contralto with edge\, snapping from molten serenity to a predatory growl in a single phrase\, and a timbre that makes you want to place your hands on the speakers just so you can capture something of its individuality.  She switches easily between the ominous and the edgy.” In addition to A Special Taste\, her second CD\, Here Comes the Sun\, has also received widespread airplay.  Her photo has graced the cover of The Los Angeles Jazz Scene\, she received the Jazz Living Legend Award in 2017\, and she received the Jexxa Award in 2021 for her contributions to Jazz. She is very proud of the two singles she released last year:  “Flor de Lis\,” (“Upside Down\,”); and Raye/dePaul’s “You Don’t Know What Love Is.”   Singer/lyricist/producer/educator Mark Winkler    sums her up thusly:  “The real deal.  There is no one like Dolores Scozzesi—she has a voice of many colors that reaches right into your heart.”

DESCRIPTION:Fri.\, Nov. 1.  STEVE (N.) BROCK. (The “N” is silent!)  Mr. Brock’s show in August was so successful that it called for a return engagement for this multi-hyphenate singer/songwriter/film-writer/producer/director/voiceover artist.  Although his voice has been compared to Kurt Reichenbach\, Kurt Elling\, and Michael Franks\, Mr. Brock counts James Taylor\, Carole King\, Billy Joel\, Elton John\, Mel Tormé\, and Harry Connick\, Jr. among his musical influences\, and possesses a special affection for bossa nova and the sounds of Brazil.  His CD\, Cry By the Light of the Moon\, (2014\,) contains inventive arrangements of classic and modern standards as well as his own original songs created over the years\, with lyrics that continue the traditions of the great story-teller songwriters like Harry Chapin and James Taylor\, including his very first song:  “Tell Me That I’m a Fool\,” written while he was still in high school.  His second CD\, Infinity\, was released in 2018.  In addition\, he wrote\, produced\, and acted in the 2020 film\, Echoes of Kerberos\, and played “Ted” in the feature film\, Reality Queen\, alongside Denise Richards.  This show features Dave Moscoe on piano and surprise guest appearances.
