DESCRIPTION:Fri.\, Jan. 31.  STEVE SIECK.  Songwriter\, pianist\, and singer\, Mr. Sieck begins a monthly three-show “residency” at The Gardenia with this first installment\, “The Jazz In Me\,” which draws from his own catalog of swing\, bossa nova\, blues\, and “jazzy pop” numbers…along with favorite standards and pop classics. \nHis February installment\, “Pop and Soul\,” will include contemporary love songs\, gospel\, pop anthems\, and R&B ballads; and his March installment\, “Unplugged\,” will feature his most personal songs and stories. \nSince relocating to L.A. from New York in late 2021\, Mr. Sieck has become a popular presence in the local jazz and cabaret scene\, having performed in NYC at such popular nightspots as Iridium\, Pangea\, The Metropolitan Room\, Don’t Tell Mama\, The Duplex\, and The Bitter End.  His album\, 21st Century Blues\, was nominated for a MAC Award as “Best Recording” in 2014\, and he has just released his newest album\, Crazy That Way\, which has received such comments from reviewers as “…an expressive…musical storyteller…\,”  “…charming and insightful songs…\,” “…engaging melodies and thoughtful lyrics…\,”and “…the influences of Donald Fagen\, Stevie Wonder\, and Bob Dorough are palpable.” \nDori Amarilio serves as musical director\, and Mr. Sieck’s vocals will be supplemented by special guest vocalists\, yet to be announced. \n

DESCRIPTION:Sun.\, Jan. 26.  Doors open at 6.  Show at 8.  MAUDE MAGGART\, in “Strangers.” One of the privileges available to Gardenia patrons is witnessing the transformation of Miss Maggart’s shows.  This show\, presented freshly conceived at The Gardenia in September\, now returns fully mature\, burnished by a run at Birdland in Manhattan. \nAndrew Poretz\, writing about the Birdland performance for NiteLifeExchange\, had this to say about “Strangers:” \n““Love Song to a Stranger” (Joan Baez) was unlike anything this writer has ever experienced at Birdland. Here\, singing about how long it’s been since [Baez] shared her twin bed with a stranger\, Maggart sensually touched her face and hair and even the piano…. \n“A wonderful choice was “Werewolf” by Maggart’s Grammy Award-winning sister\, the pop star\, Fiona Apple.  Maggart paired “Werefolf” with Bonnie Rait’s song “Just Like That\,” the song that beat Apple’s at the 2023 Grammy Awards….Her rendition was tear-inducing for this reviewer.” \n“If only Strangers wasn’t a single outing by Maggart here in New York; it’s a show well worth seeing\, especially to search out if you’re planning an LA trip any time soon.” \nIn addition to her outings at The Gardenia and Birdland\, Miss Maggart has graced The Oak Room of the Algonquin Hotel in New York\, attained national radio exposure by appearing with Garrison Keillor at the Town Hall broadcast of A Prarie Home Companion\, charmed Keillor so much that he invited her to appear with him again at The Hollywood Bowl\, appeared on the cover of Time Out New York\, and was the recipient of the Time Out New York MAC Award for “Special Achievement in Cabaret\,” AND the MAC Award for “Best Female Debut.”  In 2006\, she made her Carnegie Hall debut with Michael Feinstein\, sang with John Lithgow on his new children’s CD\, broke the summer attendance record at The Colony in Palm Beach\, sang with jazz great Dick Haymes and his orchestra at the Oregon Jazz Festival\, was listed by Entertainment Weekly as one of the top 100 Summer picks\, and participated in the filming of Bob Downey’s documentary on Kurt Weill.  She has also performed in London\, Chicago\, and Australia. Our favorite endorsement of her comes from Jim Bruce:  “If you have not yet heard Maude Maggart sing\, I envy you the moment of discovery because there is nothing quite like the very first time you realize what a talent she is.  Then again there is also nothing quite like every single time after.” \n

DESCRIPTION:Sun.\, Dec. 15.  Doors open for dinner at 6p.  Show is at 8p.  DOLORES SCOZZESI and MARK WINKLER. \nMaking her start “years ago\, when Budd Friedman’s Improv sprinkled singers between its comedy acts\,” Ms. Scozzesi studied with The Groundlings and with J.D. Lewis and Aaron Speiser.  As “an actress who sings\,” she was cast in Paul Horner’s award-winning musical revue\, Suddenly This Summer\, for which critics described her as “an arresting presence\, smokily dramatic…a blend of intelligence and passion.”    Piers Ford\, in reviewing her CD\, Jazz is a Special Taste\, enthused\, “It’s the voice that grabs you to begin with.  A rich contralto with edge\, snapping from molten serenity to a predatory growl in a single phrase\, and a timbre that makes you want to place your hands on the speakers just so you can capture something of its individuality.  She switches easily between the ominous and the edgy.” In addition to A Special Taste\, her second CD\, Here Comes the Sun\, has also received widespread airplay.  Her photo has graced the cover of The Los Angeles Jazz Scene\, she received the Jazz Living Legend Award in 2017\, and she received the Jexxa Award in 2021 for her contributions to Jazz. She is very proud of the two singles she released last year:  “Flor de Lis\,” (“Upside Down\,”); and Raye/dePaul’s “You Don’t Know What Love Is.” \nMark Winkler\, platinum-award-winning singer/lyricist and Cabaret Scenes cover boy has had over 200 of his songs recorded and/or sung by such artists as Dianne Reeves\, Randy Crawford\, Liza Minnelli\, Bob Dorough\, Jackie Ryan\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, and Britain’s Claire Martin\, and he has written lyrics for such jazz luminaries as Wayne Shorter\, Duke Pearson\, Joe Sample\, David Benoit\, and Dexter Gordon.  His CD\, Jazz and Other Four Letter Words\, received a Four Star review in Downbeat\, and received Five Stars in All About Jazz\, which calls it “One of the Finest CDs of the Year.”  Four of his lyrics were featured on the David Benoit/Jane Monheit CD\, 2 In Love\, which received a Four Star rating from All Music Guide.    “—If Mark Murphy is the reigning king of vocal hipsterism\, then Mark Winkler ranks directly behind Kurt Elling among heirs apparent.”—Chris Loudon—Jazz Times.  More can be learned at www.markwinklermusic.com \n

SUMMARY:BRANDON MAGGART
DESCRIPTION:Sat.\, Dec. 14\,   BRANDON MAGGART’s 91st Birthday Bash.  Although longtime Gardenia patrons know Brandon Maggart best as the Dad of Maude Maggart (and Fiona Apple\,) Mr. Maggart himself had a storied career on Broadway\, and was connected with The Gardenia even before either Maude or The Gardenia were born\, having starred on Broadway in Applause! when Tom Rolla\, founder of The Gardenia\, was that show’s assistant choreographer.  Nominated for a Tony Award as “Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical” for his portrayal of “Buzz Richards” in the show\, Mr. Maggart can also count among highlights of his prolific theatrical career that he was an original cast member on Sesame Street; that he portrayed “Lou\,” the eldest of the three titular brothers on TV’s Brothers (for Showtime;) that he was featured as one of Broadway’s “New Faces of 1968;” and that he appeared on film in The World According to Garp.  Already an artistic painter\, Mr. Maggart more recently took up the pen as a writer and poet\, but returned to his musical roots last year with a unique cabaret show celebrated on the actual date of his 90th birthday.  We are all so pleased that he is choosing to celebrate his 91st birthday with us this year as well\, albeit two days after his actual birthday. \n

DESCRIPTION:Fri.\, Dec. 13. MELANIE CHARTOFF.  “Dot” in the West Coast premiere of Sunday in the Park with George\, Ms. Chartoff also was in the L.A. premieres of March of the Falsettos and Big River.  She appeared on Broadway in Via Galactica and Scapino\, and appeared in the 1978 motion picture American Hot Wax.  On TV\, she was a regular on ABC’s Fridays\, in which she became known for her impression of Nancy Reagan\, and then became a regular on Fox’s Parker Lewis Can’t Lose.  She was a regular voiceover artist for Rugrats and for All Grown Up! and appeared as George Costanza’s girlfriend on Seinfeld.  Although she has sung at The Gardenia Open Mikes\, this show marks her solo Gardenia debut.

I’m delighted to be sharing the stage with my husband\, Paul Hemstreet and my stage husband\, Michael Marlen-Starr\, as well as Patricia Bahia\, David Lucky and Jill Sargeant & Gordon Grajek. And though presenting these holiday specials have become my tradition\, this is a new show\, and we won’t be serving up the same old chestnuts! You’ll be treated to some swinging & sentimental holiday songs from my Winter Was Warm album\, plus some fresh new tunes performed by this terrific group of singer songwriters\, who will be showcasing some of their poignant\, inspiring & funny original holiday music. This show’s going to be the tuneful tonic that we’re all needing! DESCRIPTION:Fri.\, Dec. 6.  CAROLYN HENNESY.  After spending the summer exercising her creative theatrical muscles in The Berkshires “and beyond\,” Ms. Hennesy returns to The Gardenia to continue to exercise her musical muscles.  The “deliciously vicious” “Penelope Ellis” on the ABC series\, Revenge; “Rosalyn” on True Blood; “Diane Miller” on General Hospital (“17 years and counting;”) and “Mrs. Valentine” on Dawson’s Creek\, the Emmy-Award-Winning Ms. Hennesy received training at the American Conservatory Theater and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She is also seen on the “big screen” in Star Wars:  Rise of Skywalker; Legally Blonde 2; and Terminator 3.  She has been a member of The Groundlings\, and received the L.A. Stage Alliance Ovation Award for “Best Actress in a Play” for her role as Maria Callas in Terrence McNally’s Master Class\, presented at the Garry Marshall Theatre.  She has received multiple additional awards for her stage work\, and has hosted the red carpet reception for the Daytime Emmy Awards.  She has also met success as a writer\, having created the popular Pandora children’s book series and the N.Y. DESCRIPTION:Sat.\, Nov. 16.  ALEXIS GACH.  (pronounced “Gatch.”)  Growing up in a household where the expectation was that each member play “one sport and one instrument\, Ms. Gach initially graduated from Humboldt State University with a “non-music major\,” but she eventually “saw the light” and graduated again in 2008\, this time from Boston’s Berklee College of Music—honing her vocal jazz “chops” with majors in Vocal Performance and Songwriting.  Discovering the art of cabaret performance at The Gardenia\, she turned heads with her debut at the club in 2014 with the quality of her performance and the intelligence of her program—and has continued to turn heads at The Gardenia many times since.

DESCRIPTION:Fri.\, Nov. 1.  STEVE (N.) BROCK. (The “N” is silent!)  Mr. Brock’s show in August was so successful that it called for a return engagement for this multi-hyphenate singer/songwriter/film-writer/producer/director/voiceover artist.  Although his voice has been compared to Kurt Reichenbach\, Kurt Elling\, and Michael Franks\, Mr. Brock counts James Taylor\, Carole King\, Billy Joel\, Elton John\, Mel Tormé\, and Harry Connick\, Jr. among his musical influences\, and possesses a special affection for bossa nova and the sounds of Brazil.  His CD\, Cry By the Light of the Moon\, (2014\,) contains inventive arrangements of classic and modern standards as well as his own original songs created over the years\, with lyrics that continue the traditions of the great story-teller songwriters like Harry Chapin and James Taylor\, including his very first song:  “Tell Me That I’m a Fool\,” written while he was still in high school.  His second CD\, Infinity\, was released in 2018.  In addition\, he wrote\, produced\, and acted in the 2020 film\, Echoes of Kerberos\, and played “Ted” in the feature film\, Reality Queen\, alongside Denise Richards.  This show features Dave Moscoe on piano and surprise guest appearances.

DESCRIPTION:Sun.\, Oct. 27.  DOLORES SCOZZESI. Making her start “years ago\, when Budd Friedman’s Improv sprinkled singers between its comedy acts\,” Ms. Scozzesi studied with The Groundlings and with J.D. Lewis and Aaron Speiser.  As “an actress who sings\,” she was cast in Paul Horner’s award-winning musical revue\, Suddenly This Summer\, for which critics described her as “an arresting presence\, smokily dramatic…a blend of intelligence and passion.”    Piers Ford\, in reviewing her CD\, Jazz is a Special Taste\, enthused\, “It’s the voice that grabs you to begin with.  A rich contralto with edge\, snapping from molten serenity to a predatory growl in a single phrase\, and a timbre that makes you want to place your hands on the speakers just so you can capture something of its individuality.  She switches easily between the ominous and the edgy.” In addition to A Special Taste\, her second CD\, Here Comes the Sun\, has also received widespread airplay.  Her photo has graced the cover of The Los Angeles Jazz Scene\, she received the Jazz Living Legend Award in 2017\, and she received the Jexxa Award in 2021 for her contributions to Jazz. She is very proud of the two singles she released last year:  “Flor de Lis\,” (“Upside Down\,”); and Raye/dePaul’s “You Don’t Know What Love Is.”   Singer/lyricist/producer/educator Mark Winkler    sums her up thusly:  “The real deal.  There is no one like Dolores Scozzesi—she has a voice of many colors that reaches right into your heart.”

DESCRIPTION:Sat.\, Oct. 19.  JOHN VANCE\, in “Mostly Jobim:  A Celebration of Brazilian Jazz\,”  with musical direction provided by Jeff Colella; Chris Colangelo on bass; and Steve Cotter on guitar.  In addition to works by Antonio Carlos Jobim\, this show also features works by Luis Bonfa\, Sergio Mendes\, Dori Caymmi\, and Marcos Valle.  Many will also recognize Mr. Vance as a TV actor\, (Hacks\, New Girl\, Two and a Half Men\, Malcolm in the Middle\, The New Normal\, and Passions\, to name a few.  On film he was directed by George Clooney in Leatherheads\, in which he had the rare treat of playing a mother and son—in the same scene! \nMr. Vance credits the Gardenia’s Tuesday open mike nights as a springboard for the recordings he produced in the “aughts” with Jeff Colella—It’s all Right With Me and Dreamsville (Erawan Records.)  Currently\, their music is streaming on Spotify\, Apple Music\, and Pandora.   More can be discovered at www.johnvance.com.

SUMMARY:KAREN CELESTE KRUZ
DESCRIPTION:Sun.\, Oct. 13.  KAREN CELESTE KRUZ\, in “Black Lace and Freudian Slips.”  Jazz a constant in her childhood home in Connecticut\, Ms. Kruz also derived influences from the unique musical sounds and culture of her primarily Hungarian family in Bridgeport.  But her neighborhood was more diverse—and she counts Broadway\, r & b\, blues\, and Latin styles among her influences as well.  She holds degrees in English and Counseling from the University of Connecticut and the University of LaVerne\, respectively\, but she also studied music\, voice\, and Latin percussion here in Los Angeles\, where previously she has sung in many local venues.  Her three-octave instrument takes on many textures—from clear and precise to smoky\, bluesy\, and even growly; Ella Firzgerald-esque to Janis Joplin-esque; big and open—to delicate as filigree— \n
