DESCRIPTION:Fri.\, July 19.  LEATA GALLOWAY.  Those who have been long-time Gardeniaphiles should be as excited as we are with the news that Leata Galloway returns to The Gardenia.  One of the elite performers at The Gardenia in the 1980’s\, Miss Galloway and The Gardenia discovered each other during her engagement in Sophisticated Ladies at the Shubert Theatre.  Those who attended her Gardenia shows were privileged to have been in the audience—as were scouts from NBC who were as impressed as we were—and booked her on The Johnny Carson Show.  Attending one of her performances at The Gardenia\, the brilliant late jazz critic Leonard Feather declared her a jazz singer “beyond category\,” and she counts among her many impressive accomplishments having been in the original Broadway company of Hair\, having sung “Electric Blues” on the film adaptation of Hair\, having sung two songs on-screen in the film\, Cotton Comes to Harlem\, and having sung behind Peggy Lee on tour. Miss Galloway’s many recordings are gems worth seeking out—AND—she laughs\, “having given up smoking\, [my] voice is clearer and brighter than ever!  If only Mr. Feather could hear [me] now!” \n

DESCRIPTION:Thu\, July 25.  The BRIAN SWARTZ QUARTET.   Jazz trumpeter Brian Swartz has established himself as one of the most influential trumpeters on the West Coast\, and has performed with or recorded with Michael Bublé\, Patti Labelle\, The Chicks\, Oingo Boingo\, Monk’estra\, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy\, and many more\, as well as having released his own well-regarded albums:  There’s Only Me; Portraiture; and 2020’s To Be with You.  He is a founding member of the Los Angeles Jazz Collective\, an organization formed to promote original jazz in Los Angeles and abroad; he has been music director for the dance ensemble\, JazzAntiqua; and his skill as an adventurous arranger earned him the position of staff arranger for the Luckman Jazz Orchestra\, John Beasley’s Mon’estra\, and the ABC TV show\, Duets.  He brings his quartet to The Gardenia with this series of four weekly performances. \n

DESCRIPTION:Fri.\, Aug. 2.  STEVE (N.) BROCK. (The “N” is silent!) in “Around the Sun.”  A return engagement for this multi-hyphenate singer/songwriter/film-writer/producer/director/voiceover artist.  Although his voice has been compared to Kurt Reichenbach\, Kurt Elling\, and Michael Franks\, Mr. Brock counts James Taylor\, Carole King\, Billy Joel\, Elton John\, Mel Tormé\, and Harry Connick\, Jr. among his musical influences\, and possesses a special affection for bossa nova and the sounds of Brazil.  His CD\, Cry By the Light of the Moon\, (2014\,) contains inventive arrangements of classic and modern standards as well as his own original songs created over the years\, with lyrics that continue the traditions of the great story-teller songwriters like Harry Chapin and James Taylor\, including his very first song: “Tell Me That I’m a Fool\,” written while he was still in high school.  His second CD\, Infinity\, was released in 2018.  In addition\, he wrote\, produced\, and acted in the 2020 film\, Echoes of Kerberos\, and played “Ted” in the feature film\, Reality Queen\, alongside Denise Richards.  This show features Dave Moscoe on piano and guest appearances by Keri Kelsey and John Ciccolini. \n

DESCRIPTION:Fri.\, Aug. 9.  TA3.  This trombonist\, songwriter\, producer\, poet\, and rapper from Lumberton\, New Jersey has been performing and crafting lyrics for over a decade.  Having been chosen to participate in several “honors” bands in South Jersey led to his study at the Berklee School of Music\, and he became a featured Carnegie Hall artist twice and a USA Songwriting Competition finalist twice.  He has performed internationally and gained the attention of several publications\, including HipHop DX\, the Courier Post\, Central Sauce\, Stereo Fox\, Today’s Hip Hop\, Broadway World\, and The Source.  This show\, “Unreleased\,” featuring his band\, The LAX Connection\, presents yet unreleased songs and works\, and “you can expect to hear a hodge-podge of Hip Hop\, rap\, r & b\, jazz\, neo-soul\, and DOPENESS!!!”   Vertius Miller supports on keys\, Mike Chapin on drums\, Jeremy Schoblocher on bass\, and Kyai Rocks on guitar.

DESCRIPTION:Sat.\, Aug. 10.  MYRIAM (BLANKAERT.) Classically trained at the Conservatory of Dramatic Arts in France\, and initially a voiceover artist\, Myriam was cast in numerous U.S. and European film and TV productions after arriving in New York City in the late 1990’s\, and worked alongside Sarah Jessica Parker in the finale of Sex & the City.  She has performed at the Paris Opera\, at Palais Garnier\, at Theatre du Chatelet\, and in the L.A. Opera productions of Il Postino and Einstein on the Beach\, by Robert Wilson and Philip Glass.  In addition to ongoing work in music videos\, she provided the French voice that opens the song “I Like You” by Doja Cat and Post Malone\, and also performs en cabaret\, specializing in the French repertoire.  She has been named an “L.A. Underground Superstar\,” garnering glowing reviews\, and also records covers and originals at Hen House Studios.

Making her start “years ago\, when Budd Friedman’s Improv sprinkled singers between its comedy acts\,” Ms. Scozzesi studied with The Groundlings and with J.D. Lewis and Aaron Speiser.  As “an actress who sings\,” she was cast in Paul Horner’s award-winning musical revue\, Suddenly This Summer\, for which critics described her as “an arresting presence\, smokily dramatic…a blend of intelligence and passion.”    Piers Ford\, in reviewing her CD\, Jazz is a Special Taste\, enthused\, “It’s the voice that grabs you to begin with.  A rich contralto with edge\, snapping from molten serenity to a predatory growl in a single phrase\, and a timbre that makes you want to place your hands on the speakers just so you can capture something of its individuality.  She switches easily between the ominous and the edgy.” In addition to A Special Taste\, her second CD\, Here Comes the Sun\, has also received widespread airplay.  Her photo has graced the cover of The Los Angeles Jazz Scene\, she received the Jazz Living Legend Award in 2017\, and she received the Jexxa Award in 2021 for her contributions to Jazz. She is very proud of the two singles she released last year:  “Flor de Lis\,” (“Upside Down\,”); and Raye/dePaul’s “You Don’t Know What Love Is.”   Singer/lyricist/producer/educator Mark Winkler sums her up thusly:  “The real deal.  There is no one like Dolores Scozzesi—she has a voice of many colors that reaches right into your heart.” \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Sat. and Sun.\, Sept. 7 & 8.  Dinner service begins at 6 p.m.  Showtime is 8 p.m.  MAUDE MAGGART\, in “Strangers.” \nPart of the fun in anticipating a Maude Maggart show involves the mystery created by knowing the show’s theme\, but then guessing how the material and its presentation will support that theme.  “Strangers” is an intriguing topic—a tease on many different levels—but the real (and extended) frisson hits only during the actual show when all reveals itself…and\, truth be known\, we’d rather not know the “set list” in advance.  It’s Maude\, after all…so we know the evening will be spectacular regardless…why chance the frisson with a spoiler alert? \nGerald Sternbach accompanies.  The show then goes to Birdland in New York City\, having been birthed\, as usual\, at The Gardenia. \nIn addition to her outings at The Gardenia\, Miss Maggart has graced the stages of Feinstein’s and The Carlyle and The Algonquin Hotels in New York\, attained national radio exposure by appearing with Garrison Keillor at the Town Hall broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion\, charmed Keillor so much that he invited her to appear with him again at The Hollywood Bowl\, appeared on the cover of Time Out New York\, and was the recipient of the Time Out New York MAC Award for “Special Achievement in Cabaret\,” AND the MAC Award for “Best Female Debut.”  In 2006\, she made her Carnegie Hall debut with Michael Feinstein\, sang with John Lithgow on his new children’s CD\, broke the summer attendance record at The Colony in Palm Beach\, sang with jazz great Dick Haymes and his orchestra at the Oregon Jazz Festival\, and was listed by Entertainment Weekly as one of the top 100 Summer picks.  She has also performed in London\, Chicago\, and Australia. SUMMARY:PIERRE CHAMBERS
DESCRIPTION:Sat.\, Sept. 14.  PIERRE CHAMBERS.  Perhaps best known to Gardenia audiences as the tenor/baritone harmonic anchor of the celebrated vocalese trio Chambers\, Herbert\, and Ellis—who re-introduced local audiences to the works of Lambert\, Hendricks\, and Ross—Mr. Chambers has “gone solo\,” and is the son of Paul Chambers\, noted bassist who worked with Miles Davis and John Coltrane in the ‘50’s.  Prior to his association with “C\,H\, & E\,” Pierre\, having been born in Brooklyn\, sang with the Lance Hayward Singers\, an East Coast jazz vocal group.  He was a featured singer for the Big Band Jazz Group\, and sang with the Family Tree Singers\, Bill Lee’s group.  (Bill Lee is Spike Lee’s father\, and composer for many of his son’s films.)  Mr. Chambers made his solo debut at The Gardenia last year\, making quite the impression as he released his solo CD\, Shining Moments\, which received glowing reviews from critics around the world\, including Scott Yanow\, then reached “#3” on the Jazzweek charts.

DESCRIPTION:Fri.\, Oct. 4.  MICHAEL KENNEN MILLER\, in “Back on the Mic\, Again\,” with musical direction by Kyle DeTarnowsky.  Armed with a BFA in Music Theater from Elon University\, Mr. Miller also possesses National Tour credits which include Footloose (Willard Hewitt\,) and Fiddler on the Roof (Fyedka.)  Other credits have included Broadway Backwards\, Hairspray (Link Larkin\,) West Side Story (Diesel\,) South Pacific (Professor\,) and You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown (Snoopy.)  He is also featured in Lady Gaga’s G.U.Y.\,and in viral videos for College Humor\, which have garnered millions of views.  An advisor on the documentary Bathtubs over Broadway\, which won the 2019 Writers Guild Award for “Best Documentary Screenplay\,” Mr. Miller has also performed live at the Tribeca Film Festival. \n
