SUMMARY:TOM CULVER
DESCRIPTION:Sat.\, March 15.   TOM CULVER.  For those for whom lyrics\, melody\, tonality\, rhythm\, and interesting harmonic progressions are the most important elements of musical production\, Tom Culver’s shows provide veritable Master Classes in how music geniuses of the last century brought these five elements together to create the yet-to-be-surpassed mid-20th-Century  Great American Songbook.  As an added bonus at this show\, Mr. Culver references his new book\, released last June:  They Did It With Their Clothes On\, a peek behind the curtain at the wardrobe/costuming trade supporting the Hollywood entertainment industry during its most fascinating era. \n

SUMMARY:AUDREY APPLEBY
DESCRIPTION:Sat.\, March 8.  AUDREY APPLEBY\, in “Life…A Seduction Tour.”  Based primarily in New York and Paris\, Ms. Appleby is a singer/songwriter/poetess who has invented a new genre she calls “Hot Chill\,” whose recent show at Pangea earned glowing reviews.  Ms. Appleby has also performed in New York at Steinway Hall (breaking a 100 year “classical music only” tradition!) and at BargeMusic (under the Brooklyn Bridge\,) as well as at Rockwood Music Hall\, The Top Of The Tower at the Beekman Tower Hotel\, Makor\, The Triad\, and The Ballroom; she has performed in Paris at Caveau De La Huchette\, Cafe Universel\, Peniches Balle Au Bon\, Le Calife\, Chez Papa\, and Le Bilboquet\, and she has performed at The American Embassy in Lyon.  She was the recipient of an ASCAP/MAC award in New York for her original song “Miami Mosaic\,” and was chosen as “pick of the week” for Paris Time Out Magazine during her European tour.  She has won numerous awards and citations along the way.  Performing with a dancer’s grace\, she and her work can perhaps be best described through the words of others:   “The most beautiful music to be on this stage.”…Michael Kerker\, Director\, Manhattan Association of Cabarets/ASCAP.  “Audrey’s music invokes the combined mystique of world-traveler meets everyday woman meets romance-novel heroine…it is a ticket out of ordinary reality and into the realm of unabashed fantasy.”… Melissa Middleton\, Director\, Good News Gospel Choir.  “Latin infused jazz/cabaret\, cool\, sultry\, soaring\, with fine musicianship\, rhythm\, and instrumentation. An interesting perspective with a mix of vantage points in subject matter\, from the singer’s personal experience\, to looking at the songs from a distance.”…Jon Mann\, Development and Arts Education\, Circle in the Square Broadway Theatre.  “Amusing observations that will hopefully revolutionize our culture some day.”…Mike Sembos\, Fairfield County Weekly.  “Extremely Clever…”  Bob Leone\, Songwriters Hall Of Fame.  Ms. Appleby’s show features “mostly original sambas\, salsas\, bossas\, and jazz\, with a few standards\,” sung primarily in English\, but with French\, Spanish\, and Italian fare as well\, all supported by a 5-piece band.  More can be learned at audreyappleby.com.

SUMMARY:MATT WATSON
DESCRIPTION:Sat.\, Feb. 8.  MATT WATSON.  Obsessed with harmonica since listening to his grandmother play her Hohner Vest Pocket Harp one Sunday afternoon\, Mr. Watson picked up a “10-hole Marine Band” harmonica at age 16\, and “couldn’t put it down\,” graduating to the “Super Chromonica” chromatic harmonica after hearing “Toots” Theileman play the theme song from Sesame Street on hers.  His obsession continuing\, he has played virtuoso harmonica with Leo LeBlanc\, Louis Lacayo\, Garrison White\, Wilson Picket\, The Commitments\, the Jamie Faunt Trio\, The Johnny Walker Blues Band\, The Horse Soldiers\, and Chad Watson (no relation.)  His work is heard on the CD’s Singing in the Valley (The Horse Soldiers\,) Blue to the Bone (Blue by Nature\,) and A Cowboy Christmas (Warner/Scotti Bros. Records.)  He is heard on the sound track for the motion picture The Return of the Killer Shrews\, and counts among his proudest moments performing with Country Music star Randy Travis at the 1993 Golden Boot Awards sponsored by the Motion Picture & Television Fund Foundation. \nAfter hearing his contributions to The Gardenia’s Open Mike nights\, our assessment is that Mr. Watson has the potential to do for the harmonica what Kenny G did for the saxophone:  bring the Vox Humana– like qualities of the instrument to “the masses\,” instilling a new appreciation for its range:  from Frontier aggression to jazz and the blues\, to a pianissimistic plaintive delicacy that can break your heart.  Who knew that amplified harmonica could be so affecting?  And aren’t we audience members lucky to be the beneficiaries of another man’s musical obsession?  Mr. Watson’s virtuosity is\, in fact\, stunning. \n

SUMMARY:MAUDE MAGGART
DESCRIPTION:Sat\, Feb. 1 (regular hours\,) and Sun.\, Feb. 2.  (Doors open at 6.  Show at 8.)  MAUDE MAGGART\, in “Strangers.” One of the privileges available to Gardenia patrons is witnessing the transformation of Miss Maggart’s shows.  This show\, presented freshly conceived at The Gardenia in September\, now returns fully mature\, burnished by a run at Birdland in Manhattan. \nAndrew Poretz\, writing about the Birdland performance for NiteLifeExchange\, had this to say about “Strangers:” \n““Love Song to a Stranger” (Joan Baez) was unlike anything this writer has ever experienced at Birdland. Here\, singing about how long it’s been since [Baez] shared her twin bed with a stranger\, Maggart sensually touched her face and hair and even the piano…. \n“A wonderful choice was “Werewolf” by Maggart’s Grammy Award-winning sister\, the pop star\, Fiona Apple.  Maggart paired “Werefolf” with Bonnie Rait’s song “Just Like That\,” the song that beat Apple’s at the 2023 Grammy Awards….Her rendition was tear-inducing for this reviewer.” \n“If only Strangers wasn’t a single outing by Maggart here in New York; it’s a show well worth seeing\, especially to search out if you’re planning an LA trip any time soon.” \nIn addition to her outings at The Gardenia and Birdland\, Miss Maggart has graced The Oak Room of the Algonquin Hotel in New York\, attained national radio exposure by appearing with Garrison Keillor at the Town Hall broadcast of A Prarie Home Companion\, charmed Keillor so much that he invited her to appear with him again at The Hollywood Bowl\, appeared on the cover of Time Out New York\, and was the recipient of the Time Out New York MAC Award for “Special Achievement in Cabaret\,” AND the MAC Award for “Best Female Debut.”  In 2006\, she made her Carnegie Hall debut with Michael Feinstein\, sang with John Lithgow on his new children’s CD\, broke the summer attendance record at The Colony in Palm Beach\, sang with jazz great Dick Haymes and his orchestra at the Oregon Jazz Festival\, was listed by Entertainment Weekly as one of the top 100 Summer picks\, and participated in the filming of Bob Downey’s documentary on Kurt Weill.  She has also performed in London\, Chicago\, and Australia. Our favorite endorsement of her comes from Jim Bruce:  “If you have not yet heard Maude Maggart sing\, I envy you the moment of discovery because there is nothing quite like the very first time you realize what a talent she is.  Then again there is also nothing quite like every single time after.” \n

SUMMARY:STEVE SIECK
DESCRIPTION:Fri.\, Jan. 31.  STEVE SIECK.  Songwriter\, pianist\, and singer\, Mr. Sieck begins a monthly three-show “residency” at The Gardenia with this first installment\, “The Jazz In Me\,” which draws from his own catalog of swing\, bossa nova\, blues\, and “jazzy pop” numbers…along with favorite standards and pop classics. \nHis February installment\, “Pop and Soul\,” will include contemporary love songs\, gospel\, pop anthems\, and R&B ballads; and his March installment\, “Unplugged\,” will feature his most personal songs and stories. \nSince relocating to L.A. from New York in late 2021\, Mr. Sieck has become a popular presence in the local jazz and cabaret scene\, having performed in NYC at such popular nightspots as Iridium\, Pangea\, The Metropolitan Room\, Don’t Tell Mama\, The Duplex\, and The Bitter End.  His album\, 21st Century Blues\, was nominated for a MAC Award as “Best Recording” in 2014\, and he has just released his newest album\, Crazy That Way\, which has received such comments from reviewers as “…an expressive…musical storyteller…\,”  “…charming and insightful songs…\,” “…engaging melodies and thoughtful lyrics…\,”and “…the influences of Donald Fagen\, Stevie Wonder\, and Bob Dorough are palpable.” \nDori Amarilio serves as musical director\, and Mr. Sieck’s vocals will be supplemented by special guest vocalists\, yet to be announced. \n

SUMMARY:DOLORES SCOZZESI and MARK WINKLER
DESCRIPTION:Sun.\, Dec. 15.  Doors open for dinner at 6p.  Show is at 8p.  DOLORES SCOZZESI and MARK WINKLER. \nMaking her start “years ago\, when Budd Friedman’s Improv sprinkled singers between its comedy acts\,” Ms. Scozzesi studied with The Groundlings and with J.D. Lewis and Aaron Speiser.  As “an actress who sings\,” she was cast in Paul Horner’s award-winning musical revue\, Suddenly This Summer\, for which critics described her as “an arresting presence\, smokily dramatic…a blend of intelligence and passion.”    Piers Ford\, in reviewing her CD\, Jazz is a Special Taste\, enthused\, “It’s the voice that grabs you to begin with.  A rich contralto with edge\, snapping from molten serenity to a predatory growl in a single phrase\, and a timbre that makes you want to place your hands on the speakers just so you can capture something of its individuality.  She switches easily between the ominous and the edgy.” In addition to A Special Taste\, her second CD\, Here Comes the Sun\, has also received widespread airplay.  Her photo has graced the cover of The Los Angeles Jazz Scene\, she received the Jazz Living Legend Award in 2017\, and she received the Jexxa Award in 2021 for her contributions to Jazz. She is very proud of the two singles she released last year:  “Flor de Lis\,” (“Upside Down\,”); and Raye/dePaul’s “You Don’t Know What Love Is.” \nMark Winkler\, platinum-award-winning singer/lyricist and Cabaret Scenes cover boy has had over 200 of his songs recorded and/or sung by such artists as Dianne Reeves\, Randy Crawford\, Liza Minnelli\, Bob Dorough\, Jackie Ryan\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, and Britain’s Claire Martin\, and he has written lyrics for such jazz luminaries as Wayne Shorter\, Duke Pearson\, Joe Sample\, David Benoit\, and Dexter Gordon.  His CD\, Jazz and Other Four Letter Words\, received a Four Star review in Downbeat\, and received Five Stars in All About Jazz\, which calls it “One of the Finest CDs of the Year.”  Four of his lyrics were featured on the David Benoit/Jane Monheit CD\, 2 In Love\, which received a Four Star rating from All Music Guide.    “—If Mark Murphy is the reigning king of vocal hipsterism\, then Mark Winkler ranks directly behind Kurt Elling among heirs apparent.”—Chris Loudon—Jazz Times.  More can be learned at www.markwinklermusic.com \n

SUMMARY:BRANDON MAGGART
DESCRIPTION:Sat.\, Dec. 14\,   BRANDON MAGGART’s 91st Birthday Bash.  Although longtime Gardenia patrons know Brandon Maggart best as the Dad of Maude Maggart (and Fiona Apple\,) Mr. Maggart himself had a storied career on Broadway\, and was connected with The Gardenia even before either Maude or The Gardenia were born\, having starred on Broadway in Applause! when Tom Rolla\, founder of The Gardenia\, was that show’s assistant choreographer.  Nominated for a Tony Award as “Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical” for his portrayal of “Buzz Richards” in the show\, Mr. Maggart can also count among highlights of his prolific theatrical career that he was an original cast member on Sesame Street; that he portrayed “Lou\,” the eldest of the three titular brothers on TV’s Brothers (for Showtime;) that he was featured as one of Broadway’s “New Faces of 1968;” and that he appeared on film in The World According to Garp.  Already an artistic painter\, Mr. Maggart more recently took up the pen as a writer and poet\, but returned to his musical roots last year with a unique cabaret show celebrated on the actual date of his 90th birthday.  We are all so pleased that he is choosing to celebrate his 91st birthday with us this year as well\, albeit two days after his actual birthday. \n

DESCRIPTION:Sun.\, December 8\, at 8 p.m.  (Door opens and dinner service begins at 6 p.m.)   ANDREA MARCOVICCI and MAUDE MAGGART cap off 2024’s residency of monthly shows with what may be becoming an annual Christmas tribute\, a potpourri featuring well-known and well-loved Christmas musical fare gifted with a sprinkling of not-so-well-known gems\, surprises\, and the re-discovery of the importance of lyrics that characterizes the duo’s forte. \nFrequently introduced as “the Queen of Cabaret\,” Ms. Marcovicci transformed the “cabaret genre\,” has created over 35 nightclub acts at The Gardenia\, and holds the record—an unprecedented 25 seasons—at the legendary Oak Room of The Algonquin Hotel—as well as the distinction of being the Oak Room’s final performer before its closing.  She combines forces with Maude Maggart\, considered by many to be Marcovicci’s heir apparent\, who can boast her own cabaret beginnings at The Gardenia a half generation later.  Our favorite endorsement of Ms. Maggart comes from Jim Bruce:  “If you have not yet heard Maude Maggart sing\, I envy you the moment of discovery because there is nothing quite like the very first time you realize what a talent she is.  Then again there is also nothing quite like every single time after.” \nMusical Director is Gerald Sternbach\, and Nate Light supports on bass.

SUMMARY:JEUDI
DESCRIPTION:Sat.\, Dec. 7.  JEUDI presents “Jeudi’s Vintage Holiday Special.” Here is a description of the show in her very own words: \nOnce again\, I’m putting together a terrific vintage variety show program that harkens back to the beloved TV Holiday Specials of yore\, inspired by those of my idol\, Judy Garland. I’m delighted to be sharing the stage with my husband\, Paul Hemstreet and my stage husband\, Michael Marlen-Starr\, as well as Patricia Bahia\, David Lucky and Jill Sargeant & Gordon Grajek. And though presenting these holiday specials have become my tradition\, this is a new show\, and we won’t be serving up the same old chestnuts! You’ll be treated to some swinging & sentimental holiday songs from my Winter Was Warm album\, plus some fresh new tunes performed by this terrific group of singer songwriters\, who will be showcasing some of their poignant\, inspiring & funny original holiday music. This show’s going to be the tuneful tonic that we’re all needing! Come join us for a cozy evening of magical merriment\, levity\, love and laughter!  \nThis show will sell out! \nGuarantee your spot. \nMake your reservation now.      \nCall (323) 467-7444 \nor Text (818) 383-6832 \n  \nThe “Vintage-voiced Chanteuse\,” Jeudi Cornejo Brealey\, comes by her passions naturally as the daughter of a suave\, storytelling Costa Rican tuna pole-fisherman father and a stylish Mexican American mother\, who competed in USO swing dance contests while working in an airplane factory by day.  Encouraged by her family to explore the arts\, Jeudi took advanced studies at The Sorbonne and at the NYU-Tisch School of the Arts\, and earned her MFA at CalArts.  Considering herself a “musical archeologist\,” she delves deeply into our musical past\, dusting off gems worthy of play\, but somehow forgotten in the rushing flood of titles and evolving musical genres that define new generations.  Her CD\, Winter Was Warm\, boasting intriguing but mostly lesser-known\, mostly early mid-20th-century\, seasonal fare\, prompted the venerated jazz icon\, Mark Winkler\, to enthuse\, “The best holidays songs you’ve never heard!”  From Oct. 2021 through Feb. 2023\, Jeudi worked toward perfecting her musical\, Love Outshines the Moon\, with a residency of monthly performances at The Jeweled Universe in Pasadena.  New developments pertaining to the musical…and more information…can be gleaned at www.jeudi.biz and at bandcamp.com/jeudibrealey.
