SUMMARY:PAMELA CLAY
DESCRIPTION:Thu.\, Jan. 18.  PAMELA CLAY.  Possessing a “power belt\,” solid and confident pitch\, a party-girl charisma\, and a repertoire that broadens what patrons have come to expect as “Gardenia fare\,” Pamela Clay parties down with this show celebrating her natal day.  One can expect the unexpected from this chanteuse who has established herself as the Southland’s premier interpreter of chansons…and Edith Piaf in particular.  (But be forewarned:  “Non\, Je ne Regrette Rien” is NOT the anthem of a “wounded sparrow\,” shy and retiring waif!)    Ms. Clay has appeared at the John F. Kennedy Center\, the John Anson Ford Theatre\, the Wilshire-Ebell Theatre\, Feinstein’s 54 Below in Manhattan\, and on-screen opposite Tommy Lee Jones.  Fluent in French\, she lived in Paris and Bordeaux for many years\, and performed her self-penned one-woman show\, Toujours l’Amour!\, directed by Chase Matthews\, to sold-out crowds in several Southland venues.  More can be learned at www.PamelaClay.com. \n

SUMMARY:BRANDON MAGGART's 90th Birthday Bash
DESCRIPTION:Tue.\, Dec. 12\, at 8 p.m.  BRANDON MAGGART’s 90th Birthday Bash.  Although longtime Gardenia patrons know Brandon Maggart best as the patriarch of the Maggart Clan  and Dad of Maude Maggart (and Fiona Apple\,) Mr. Maggart had a storied career on Broadway himself\, and was connected with The Gardenia even before either Maude or The Gardenia were born\, having starred on Broadway in Applause! when Tom Rolla\, founder of The Gardenia\, was that show’s assistant choreographer.  Nominated for a Tony Award as “Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical” for his portrayal of “Buzz Richards” in the show\, Mr. Maggart can also count among the highlights of his prolific theatrical career that he was an original cast member on Sesame Street; that he portrayed “Lou\,” the eldest of the three titular brothers on TV’s Brothers (for Showtime;) that he was featured as one of Broadway’s “New Faces of 1968;” and that he appeared on film in The World According to Garp.  Already an artistic painter\, Mr. Maggart more recently took up the pen as a writer and poet\, but returns to his musical roots with this cabaret show\, celebrated on the actual date of his 90th birthday. \n

SUMMARY:ANDREA MARCOVICCI and MAUDE MAGGART---"A GARDENIA CHRISTMAS"
DESCRIPTION:Sun.\, Dec. 10\, at 8 p.m.  ANDREA MARCOVICCI and MAUDE MAGGART—“A Gardenia Christmas.” \nJoin these two fast friends for this warm-hearted celebration of the Holidays—an evening of perennial favorites….and surprises. \nFrequently introduced as “the Queen of Cabaret\,” Andrea Marcovicci transformed the genre\, has created over 35 nightclub acts at The Gardenia\, and holds the record—an unprecedented 25 seasons—at the legendary Oak Room of The Algonquin Hotel—as well as the distinction of being the Oak Room’s final performer before its closing.  Maude Maggart\, considered by many Ms. Marcovicci’s heir apparent\, stakes claim to her own cabaret beginnings at The Gardenia a half generation later.  Our favorite endorsement of Ms. Maggart comes from Jim Bruce:  “If you have not yet heard Maude Maggart sing\, I envy you the moment of discovery because there is nothing quite like the very first time you realize what a talent she is.  Then again there is also nothing quite like every single time after.”  Maude’s husband\, David Lucky\, himself a songsmith and Gardenia performance veteran\, serves as “Special Guest” for this show.  Musical Director is Gerald Sternbach.  Even more can be learned at andreamarcovicci.com.

DESCRIPTION:Fri.\, Dec. 8.  LAURAL MEADE\, in “Ms. Tucker Will See You Now.”  A longtime member of the theater faculty at Occidental College\, playwright and musical performer Ms. Meade has sung in Southern California venues “both sacred and profane\,” and directs a choir for The Secret City.  Her vocal musicianship has turned heads at The Gardenia Open Mike\, where we were delighted to learn that she has penned this performance piece in which she exposits Sophie Tucker\, “the Last of the Red Hot Mamas\,” arguably the most popular entertainer of Tucker’s day\, in a bawdy cabaret exploration of Tucker’s extraordinary personal life\, career\, and risqué song catalog.   Ms. Meade continues to perfect this brilliantly written and performed show\, which\, because its subject “worked Blue\,” is constructed not for the faint of heart nor for the pearl-clutching pretenders of easy offence.  Using hilarity as pedagogue’s tool\, Ms. Mead also mobilizes impressive musical forces to allow her audience to conclude the evening “educationally enriched.”  For those who were awed by\, and for those unlucky enough to have missed\, Ms. Meade’s previous shows\, this booking offers the opportunity to catch this evolving reprise.  Repeat audience members are now bringing friends—quite the testimonial to a superlative entertainment experience. \n

SUMMARY:SAMANTHA SIDLEY
DESCRIPTION:Thu.\, Dec. 7.  SAMANTHA SIDLEY.  We can’t sufficiently convey how excited we are that Samantha Sidley has at last emerged from the “pandemic dormancy\,” now with a new and more intimate show\, harkening back to her beginnings with accompanist and collaborator\, Dan Reckard—with their unique arrangements and insightful treatments of well-known and forgotten standards.  Drawn to each other’s musical sensibilities as USC music students\, their enduring mutual admiration projects through every phrase.  Yes\, their repertoire includes fare for which The Gardenia has become best known:  American Songbook\, classics from the 20’s through the 60’s\, gems from the musical theatre\, etc.; but their style is completely unique\, their program a youthful yet insightful cornucopia of finely wrought musical delicacies\, each unusually well-integrated. Unlike the parfait approach most jazz musicians/stylists bring to a “set\,” with each participant adding his or her individual layer\, this duo plumbs their material thoroughly and bakes their product beforehand\, the result no longer simply songs upon which instrumental ornaments have been hung\, but unique art pieces that stand by themselves.  The award-winning Miss Sidley herself brings supple tonality\, a Jessica Rabbit sensuality\, and an arresting singers’ port de bras; and musical director Dan Reckard brings fresh\, innovative\, and sensitive piano underpinnings.  Before “the pandemic\,” word-of-mouth spread\, and Miss Sidley’s performances became “standing room only.”  We so look forward to partaking of this duo’s tantalizing musical morsels once again. \n

SUMMARY:JEUDI
DESCRIPTION:Sat.\, Dec. 2.  JEUDI presents “Jeudi’s Vintage Holiday Special\,” a “fun and festive nod to the heartfelt and kitschy TV holiday specials of the 1960’s and 70’s\, featuring lesser-known holiday tunes from the Jazz Age to the Swinging Era and beyond.” The show features guest appearances by Audrey Appleby\, David Lucky\, Michael Marlen-Starr\, and Paul Hemstreet\, with musical direction by Charlie Harrison. \nJeudi Cornejo Brealey\, the “Vintage-voiced Chanteuse\,” comes by her passions naturally as the daughter of a suave\, storytelling Costa Rican tuna pole-fisherman father and a stylish Mexican American mother\, who competed in USO swing dance contests while working in an airplane factory by day.  Encouraged by her family to explore the arts\, Jeudi took advanced studies at The Sorbonne and at the NYU-Tisch School of the Arts\, and earned her MFA at CalArts.  Considering herself a “musical archeologist\,” she delves deeply into our musical past\, dusting off gems worthy of play\, but somehow forgotten in the rushing flood of titles and evolving musical genres that define new generations.  Her CD\, Winter Was Warm\, boasting intriguing but mostly lesser-known\, mostly early mid-20th-century\, seasonal fare\, prompted the venerated jazz icon\, Mark Winkler\, to enthuse\, “The best holidays songs you’ve never heard!”  From Oct. 2021 through Feb. 2023\, Jeudi worked toward perfecting her musical\, Love Outshines the Moon\, with a residency of monthly performances at The Jeweled Universe in Pasadena.  New developments pertaining to the musical will be coming in 2024. More information can be gleaned at www.jeudi.biz.

SUMMARY:SANDRA PILLER
DESCRIPTION:Fri.\, Dec. 1.  SANDRA PILLER.  Although born and raised in Southern California\, Ms. Piller has “always been a country girl at heart\,” and a number of years ago was named “Best New Country Artist” by New Music Weekly.  However\, she has also become attracted to the Great American Songbook\, and her previous outings at The Gardenia have often featured the songs of her late mother-in-law\, Ruth Roberts\, who prolifically wrote Hit Parade tunes for such stars as Doris Day\, Buddy Holly\, Debbie Reynolds\, The Lennon Sisters\, Dean Martin\, Theresa Brewer\, The McGuire Sisters\, Patti Page\, Jimmy Dean\, Eydie Gorme\, the Lawrence Welk Orchestra\, Freda Payne\, Petula Clark\, Louie Armstrong\, Ella Fitzgerald\, and many others.  Ms. Piller honors the Holiday Season this year with a mix of all her favorite genres.  We always look forward to her shows\, peppered as they are with new revelations and insights. \n

SUMMARY:JACKIE GIBSON. "Songs at the Brill Building."
DESCRIPTION:Fri.\, Nov. 17.  JACKIE GIBSON.  “Songs at the Brill Building.”  1619 Broadway on 49th Street in New York was to the popular music of the late ‘50’s and ‘60’s as Tin Pan Alley was to the popular music earlier in the 20th Century\, with the Brill Building’s girl groups and teen idols supplying popular music’s grist post-50’s-Elvis and pre-Beatles.  By 1962\, the Brill Building contained 165 music businesses\, including publishers\, printers\, songwriters\, demo-cutting studios\, and promoters…all in one building.  Lieber and Stoller\, Neil Sedaka\, Burt Bacharach\, Hal David\, Phil Spector\, and Carole King are among the many artists who have come to be associated with the Brill Building Sound\, brought back to our collective awareness in this show.    Enhancing the show even further are invited guests Larry Davis\, John Ciccolini\, and Judy Barrat; and Ms. Gibson has even assembled her own girl group\, “The AquaNets\,” comprised of Lorraina Marro\, Tiffany Bailey\, and Kimberly Scott-Moseley.  Steve Rawlins\, (musical director and originator of the show concept\,) supports on piano; with Craig Copeland on guitar; Gordon Peeke on drums; and John Hatton\, AKA Spazz (who used to play for Ms. Gibson back in the 80’s in her original rock band\,) on bass. \nMs. Gibson was part of L.A.’s Folk Movement as a teenager\, appearing alongside the likes of Joni Mitchell at venues such as The Troubadour and Ciro’s.  Over the years she has performed all over greater Los Angeles\, including at The Gardenia\, and\, proud of her Latina heritage\, she has also been a vocalist on KMEX’s Nosotros.  She is the creator of Jazz del Corazon\, marshalling her talent and those of others to provide financial support for those in the local music community in extreme need.  She is currently collaborating with singer/songwriter Wayne Moore on an upcoming children’s book\, and is writing a book about her mother\, Dr. Helia Israel Benavides Olivera\, M.D.  She is a member of the Children’s Hospital Monrovia Guild\, and a member of the non-profit group Theatre Americana\, which performs for various charities around the Southland. Jazz reviewer Scott Yanow has said of Ms. Gibson\, “….Gibson…has a voice that is both passionate and soothing\, full of honest emotions…”  and celebrated vocal coach Terri Baker has enthused\, “…So great to hear a singer who knows what she’s singing about…and…you feel it 100%.” \n  \n

SUMMARY:CLAUDE HALL
DESCRIPTION:Fri.\, Oct. 27.  CLAUDE HALL perfects her tribute to Nina Simone\, backed by Musical Director Jamieson Trotter.  Born in Brooklyn of Haitian parents\, Miss Hall moved to Paris in 1989\, but an autumn weekend in Prague in 2003 proved pivotal when a friend overheard her singing a few Gershwin tunes and asked her to record a demo of “When I Fall In Love.”  This led to a sojourn in Saint Bart’s\, where she became the resident singer at Casa Nikki and La Plage\, and found delight in discovering musical ways to express the multiple facets of her personality. She has been resident artist at l’Ermitage Hotel\, Hotel Angeleno’s West Penthouse Lounge\, La Valencia Hotel\, and at Bar Marmont\, and has taken her show to the Metropolitan Room in New York City.  “The voice of Claude Hall….has grown beyond her New York City roots and her Caribbean background.  Her live show offers tales full of jubilation\, boldness\, musicality\, and improvisation.”—Miguel Costa for Music Connection Magazine.  This show examines the remarkable arc of Nina Simone’s life\, from Simone’s “discovery” in an Atlantic City piano bar singing “I Loves You Porgy” through her participation in the civil rights movement. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:LAURAL MEADE
DESCRIPTION:Fri.\, Oct. 13. Repeat audience members are now bringing friends—quite the testimonial to a “superlative entertainment product.” \n
