ADAM COHEN.  Keri Kelsey\, with the help of Jerome Pittman\, has assembled quite the posse drawn from the very best musicians in Los Angeles to support the Gardenia Open Mike\, presented every Tuesday evening.  Among these musicians has been bassist Adam Cohen\, whose eyes and ears extend “beyond the bass” into the role of impresario\, gathering the best musicians from his professional connections to curate his own evenings at The Gardenia.  Attending these evenings has been to be privileged to witness\, and be in the company of\, such talent.  This evening’s keyboardist is Todd Hunter\, and the vocalist is DAN MASON\, an Open Mike standout\, whose voice is an aromatic tincture of honey\, vinegar\, and smoke with a homeopathic whiff of soul deserving of a wider audience\, and for whom we have been patiently awaiting the opportunity to hear a full evening dedicated to his singular stylings. \n

Stage Alliance Ovation Award for “Best Actress in a Play” for her role as Maria Callas in Terrence McNally’s Master Class\, presented at the Garry Marshall Theatre.  She has received multiple additional awards for her stage work\, and has hosted the red carpet reception for the Daytime Emmy Awards.  She has also met success as a writer\, having created the popular Pandora children’s book series and the N.Y. DESCRIPTION:Fri. and Sat.\, Sept. 22 & 23.  MAUDE MAGGART.  In addition to her outings at The Gardenia\, Miss Maggart has graced the stages of Feinstein’s and The Carlyle and The Algonquin Hotels in New York\, attained national radio exposure by appearing with Garrison Keillor at the Town Hall broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion\, charmed Keillor so much that he invited her to appear with him again at The Hollywood Bowl\, appeared on the cover of Time Out New York\, and was the recipient of the Time Out New York MAC Award for “Special Achievement in Cabaret\,” AND the MAC Award for “Best Female Debut.”  In 2006\, she made her Carnegie Hall debut with Michael Feinstein\, sang with John Lithgow on his new children’s CD\, broke the summer attendance record at The Colony in Palm Beach\, sang with jazz great Dick Haymes and his orchestra at the Oregon Jazz Festival\, and was listed by Entertainment Weekly as one of the top 100 Summer picks.  She has also performed in London\, Chicago\, and Australia. DESCRIPTION:Fri. and Sat.\, Sept. 22 & 23.  MAUDE MAGGART.  In addition to her outings at The Gardenia\, Miss Maggart has graced the stages of Feinstein’s and The Carlyle and The Algonquin Hotels in New York\, attained national radio exposure by appearing with Garrison Keillor at the Town Hall broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion\, charmed Keillor so much that he invited her to appear with him again at The Hollywood Bowl\, appeared on the cover of Time Out New York\, and was the recipient of the Time Out New York MAC Award for “Special Achievement in Cabaret\,” AND the MAC Award for “Best Female Debut.”  In 2006\, she made her Carnegie Hall debut with Michael Feinstein\, sang with John Lithgow on his new children’s CD\, broke the summer attendance record at The Colony in Palm Beach\, sang with jazz great Dick Haymes and his orchestra at the Oregon Jazz Festival\, and was listed by Entertainment Weekly as one of the top 100 Summer picks.  She has also performed in London\, Chicago\, and Australia. DESCRIPTION:Thu.\, Sept. 28.  JAIME BARCELON\, in “The Heart of the Matter.”  An actor and vocalist based in Los Angeles\, Mr. Barcelon was an original member of the award-winning Ryan Cayabyab Singers\, with whom he recorded and toured globally.   (Ryan Cayabyab recognized as a “National Artist of The Philippines.”)  After moving to the U.S.\, Mr. Barcelon appeared with the East West Players and has performed with the Metropolitan Master Chorale\, as well as with the pop gospel vocal group\, RAISE. \nRecently a Quarterfinalist at the prestigious American Traditions Vocal Competition in Savannah\, Georgia\, Mr. Barcelon has acted in numerous network TV shows stateside\, and with this performance makes his Los Angeles solo musical debut.  Gerald White serves as Musical Director.

SUMMARY:LAURAL MEADE
DESCRIPTION:Fri.\, Oct. 13.  LAURAL MEADE\, in “Ms. Tucker Will See You Now.”  A longtime member of the theater faculty at Occidental College\, playwright and musical performer Ms. Meade has sung in Southern California venues “both sacred and profane\,” and directs a choir for The Secret City.  Her vocal musicianship has turned heads at The Gardenia Open Mike\, where we were delighted to learn that she has penned this performance piece in which she exposits Sophie Tucker\, “the Last of the Red Hot Mamas\,” arguably the most popular entertainer of Tucker’s day\, in a bawdy cabaret exploration of Tucker’s extraordinary personal life\, career\, and risqué song catalog.   Ms. Meade continues to perfect this brilliantly written and performed show\, which\, because its subject “worked Blue\,” is constructed not for the faint of heart nor for the pearl-clutching pretenders of easy offence.  Using hilarity as pedagogue’s tool\, Ms. Mead also mobilizes impressive musical forces to allow her audience to conclude the evening “educationally enriched.”  For those who were awed by\, and for those unlucky enough to have missed\, Ms. Meade’s previous shows\, this booking offers the opportunity to catch this evolving reprise.  Repeat audience members are now bringing friends—quite the testimonial to a “superlative entertainment product.” \n

DESCRIPTION:Fri.\, Oct. 27.  CLAUDE HALL perfects her tribute to Nina Simone\, backed by Musical Director Jamieson Trotter.  Born in Brooklyn of Haitian parents\, Miss Hall moved to Paris in 1989\, but an autumn weekend in Prague in 2003 proved pivotal when a friend overheard her singing a few Gershwin tunes and asked her to record a demo of “When I Fall In Love.”  This led to a sojourn in Saint Bart’s\, where she became the resident singer at Casa Nikki and La Plage\, and found delight in discovering musical ways to express the multiple facets of her personality. She has been resident artist at l’Ermitage Hotel\, Hotel Angeleno’s West Penthouse Lounge\, La Valencia Hotel\, and at Bar Marmont\, and has taken her show to the Metropolitan Room in New York City.  “The voice of Claude Hall….has grown beyond her New York City roots and her Caribbean background.  Her live show offers tales full of jubilation\, boldness\, musicality\, and improvisation.”—Miguel Costa for Music Connection Magazine.  This show examines the remarkable arc of Nina Simone’s life\, from Simone’s “discovery” in an Atlantic City piano bar singing “I Loves You Porgy” through her participation in the civil rights movement. \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Sat.\, Oct. 28.  CAROLYN HENNESY.  The “deliciously vicious” “Penelope Ellis” on the ABC series\, Revenge; “Rosalyn” on True Blood; “Diane Miller” on General Hospital (“17 years and counting;”) and “Mrs. Valentine” on Dawson’s Creek\, Ms. Hennesy received training at the American Conservatory Theater and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She is also seen on the “big screen” in Star Wars:  Rise of Skywalker; Legally Blonde 2; and Terminator 3.  She has been a member of The Groundlings\, and received the L.A. Stage Alliance Ovation Award for “Best Actress in a Play” for her role as Maria Callas in Terrence McNally’s Master Class\, presented at the Garry Marshall Theatre.  She has received multiple additional awards for her stage work\, and has hosted the red carpet reception for the Daytime Emmy Awards.  She has also met success as a writer\, having created the popular Pandora children’s book series and the N.Y. Times Bestseller\, The Secret Life of Damian Spinelli.  Adding to her list of creative accomplishments\, she explored her musical side with her debut at The Gardenia in August\, a display of “vocal chops” and performance presentation that was received so well it prompted this repeat booking.

DESCRIPTION:Sat.\, Nov. 4.  KENSHAKA ALI\, in “A Love Supreme.”  Singer\, director\, acting coach\, and professor of theatre arts\, Mr. Ali was born and raised across the street from the famed Apollo Theater in Harlem\, where\, running errands for the backstage crews\, he was let in for free.   Although captivated by Motown\, blues\, and R & B\, he was drawn more to the lyricism of jazz\, so from the Boys Choir of Harlem he went on to study with jazz vocalist Jay Clayton at City College New York\, and after moving to California\, taught theater at Cal State Dominguez Hills\, then at Pomona College in Claremont\, (and in “A Shirt and a Skirt” shared the bill with the great Barbara Morrison.)  As an Agape Licensed Spiritual Practitioner\, he is drawn to fare reflecting a spiritual understanding of love—personal\, romantic\, communal\, and divine; and follows in the tradition of the great baritone jazz balladeers such as Johnny Hartman\, Joe Williams\, and Arthur Prysock.  For this evening\, he has gathered the support of Karen Hernandez on piano\, Dori Amarilio on guitar\, John Jackson on drums\, and Henry “Skipper” Franklin on bass. \n
